Overview

Aramatai Gardens are situated within a beautiful valley surrounded by amazing hills, being undulated provides it with interesting contours of plantings that consist of various exotic & weeping trees, natives, rhododendrons, camellias, roses, perennials, Irises, lilies, plus two large natural ponds & rock formations and their associated plants & fauna.

It also features a vegetable garden, sunken garden, fruit & nut orchard, extensive lawns and walkways.

This is an oasis just off the main highway where stresses can be forgotten amongst nature at its best. Our plants mainly consist of exotic & weeping trees, beautiful Rhododendrons, Camellias, Roses, Clematis, Lillies, Irises, Natives,  Perennials etc.  

The Gardener

Stu and Trisha Donaldson lived on this property for almost 32 years, they began creating the garden in 1992 where it was designed from bare paddocks. Leo & Jill Mouat purchased the property in December 2012.  Leo passed away in September 2020, Jill continues to enjoy the garden while our son and daughter in law now run the farm.

2 hectares of garden, allow 1 - 2 hours for your visit.

Other Facilities

A 30-minute walk through our sheep and beef farm to a large picturesque hidden waterfall and native bush area.

It's a 10-minute drive to the very spectacular 90-foot-tall Doc. Waterfall. [Omaru Falls]

A 15-minute drive to Mapara Kokako bird reserve and a 45-minute drive to Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, black water rafting and abseiling adventures.

  • Accommodation
    Our spacious bed and breakfast features a flat-screen TV. The kitchenette is fitted with an oven, a microwave and a toaster and there is a private bathroom with a hairdryer and free toiletries. The bed and breakfast offers bed linen, towels and housekeeping service.

    For each person, we charge $5.00 NZ Other charges can be established with your enquiries.
  • Parking
    Off-street parking for buses coaches and cars.
  • Wheelchair Access
    The terrain is very undulated and tracks can be slippery. The lower part of the garden can be accessed by a wheelchair when it is dry.
  • Dogs allowed?
    No dogs thank you as there is stock around.
  • Food available?
    Morning/afternoon teas and lunches are available by arrangement.
  • Picnics
    Yes please bring your picnic.
  • Children allowed?
    Yes but do supervise at all times as there are large ponds.
  • Toilets?
    Yes.
  • Seating
    Our beautiful garden is peaceful, tranquil and restful with many rustic seats for you to relax and view our lovely surroundings.
  • Plants/Sales
    Not at this stage.
  • Guided Tours
    Yes, we are happy to show our visitors around the gardens.
  • Weddings

    Yes, we only host weddings for the ceremony and photos.

We are 12 kms from SH 3 (or Eight Mile Junction) on the way to MT Ruapehu on State Highway 4. Our drive entrance is about 120 metres long.
